WHY BONGO?
As long as I can remember I have been involved in Marching Bands lulled asleep as a baby by the vivid tones of the trumpets and drums of a Scout and Guide band, which was to become my first experience of entertaining the public.
As a 10 year old I was too young to realise my childhood dream to lead the band as drum major so I began the life of a drummer. Having achieved Drum Major in my early teens a new band (Derbyairs) found me back on drum in the position of Lead Drummer until I upgraded to a set of three Toms. During my late teens I had extended my list of achievements to include Drum Major, Side/Lead Drummer, Bass Drummer (boring), Tri-Tom and a spell on trumpet where I met my wife Jane (Trumpeter). After taking over as Bandmaster of my previous band I joined The Derby Midshipmen Carnival Band in March 1993 and moved back onto my set of three toms hence the nickname "Bongo". After all this I still fill in as Drum Major when needed but prefer my "Bongos" now five toms. e-mail bongo@midshipmen.org.uk |
